The Sacred Window
In Ayurveda, the first 42 days or 6 weeks are known to be a sacred period, a window requiring Sutika Paricharya. The sutika, a person who has completed delivery of baby and placenta, should be met with an intentional level of devout care and attendance. They must rest so they can achieve optimal recovery. We do this through conscious consumption (Ahara-Vihara - literally translating to food-lifestyle) and medical attention (Aushadi).
After birth, the sutika’s vata dosha is imbalanced after the immense physical exertion and fluid+blood loss from labor and delivery. Vata is 1 of 3 bio-energies (or doshas) combining air and ether elements in the body, and associated with all movement. An excess in vata correlates with an imbalanced apanu vayu, the downward flowing energy in the pelvic region that is responsible for all bodily eliminations and labor+delivery. A vata imbalance can manifest as anxiety, insomnia, restlessness, constipation, hemorrhoids, cold intolerance, dry skin, dry membranes, joint problems and hypertension.
A sutika paricharya will restore the tridoshic balance in the birthing person through a vata-pacifying diet, belly binding, regular Abhyanga oil massages, and prana positive herb steaming or fumigation (dhupana).
